Off The Wall Gallery show last night in Portland at Breeze Block Gallery. It was packed, rad stuff from Tim Kerr and Jay Howell. Rich Jacobs, Marco Zamora had nice stuff too. Sunfoot, the band Chris Johansen plays in was awesome.... after he played, he was slain by a rollerblader distributing flyers for an upcoming Slayer show. TOMORROW NIGHT...COSTA MESA, CA: The Artery presents Suburban Nightmare: Punk In OC, a group show of artists curated by Jesse La Tour (Hibbleton Gallery), which opens July 8th with an opening reception from 6 - 10 pm. The artist line up include the talents of punk/goth legend Rikk Agnew (Adolescents/D.I./Social Distortion/Christian Death / 45 Grave), Edward Colver, Russ Pope (VANS), Paul D’Elia, William Zdan, Christie Yuri Noh, Burger Records, Mike Atta, and more.

The show will focus on the punk counter-culture history in Orange County and its relevance today in direct contrast to the stereotypes of the OC as a conservative, affluent, and materialistic. The show will exhibit and celebrate the underground culture that arose, and the punk artists featured in this show question cultural attitudes and present an alternative attitude of free expresssion.

This show is curated by Jesse La Tour of The Hibbleton Gallery in Fullerton as a part of a gallery swap so be sure to check out ARTery Gallery Director Tracey Taylor’s show at The Hibbleton “Hotter Than a Match Head: A Love Letter to the City” opening on July 1 during the Downtown Fullerton First Friday Art Walk!

The Transportation Unit Project. I'm making small runs of hand built in California Skateboards. Small, like between 6 and 20 decks or so at a time. Hopefully a different shape each time. Each board has a hand painted background and a hand cut stencil sprayed on top. The tops of the boards each have an individual # and hand brushed character on them. I'm selling these for $75.00 each + $10. shipping and handling. This shape is a run of 20. Each one is a little different color wise, The Shape is basically 9" wide by 33" long. ‘Change Required’ — art exhibit brings change of pace to SLOMA

Culture and politics made its way into the dark cartoonish sketches and whimsical pastel backgrounds of the new paintings on display at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art (SLOMA).

The double entendre of the “Change Required” exhibit encapsulates the messages that alternative artist Russ Pope, whose style strays from traditional artwork, hopes to convey.

The paintings in the exhibit address the questions: When is it time for change? Can you spare some change? Is change in the air? Do you embrace change? How do ideas change? And, is change required?

“Each piece has a small message,” Pope said. “Most of my work is based on social commentary. Every individual gets something different out of it.”

For example, Pope said one of his paintings is loosely based on social media and advertising.

“It visually tells a story of the change from print ads to being blasted on every level intellectually, by (digital) advertising,” Pope said.

The paintings, which are mostly acrylic and ink on either canvas or wood, draw inspiration from human interaction, music and life in general, Pope said.

Pope also incorporates skateboarding into his art, which makes sense since he said he is as heavily involved in the skate industry (he currently works for Vans) as he is with his art.

Five unique, hand-painted skateboards will be part of the “Change Required” exhibit. Each board is uniformly numbered on the bottom, but will feature individually exclusive characters on the top.

The exhibit is expected to attract a younger crowd.

“The art is different and definitely something younger people can appreciate, especially the skateboard aspect,” liberal studies senior Janelle Leza said. “I also like art more when it has a deeper meaning.”

SLOMA assistant director Muara Johnston said “Change Required” will be featured during this month’s Art After Art After Dark, which is a community art sharing and appreciation event similar to Art After Dark, only later and aimed at a younger, high school and college-age crowd.

This event usually displays the art of various local artists, spontaneously created and based on a chosen theme. This month, however, the only art on display will be the “Change Required” exhibit.

Johnston said Art after Art After Dark, which is from 9 to 11 p.m. on Friday night, provides musical entertainment and sets the scene for people to hang out, enjoy the art and engage in conversation with the artists and fellow peers.

“That’s the purpose of Art after Art After Dark,” Johnston said. “So how appropriate is Russ? He wants you to discuss art and politics and current environmental issues. He wants to pique your interest and get you talking about stuff.”

Although this is true, Pope said he does not want socialization to take away from the actual purpose of the show: the art.

“Hopefully they’ll leave having seen some cool art,” Pope said. “There are a lot of art shows where they want to make it a social event and people don’t pay any attention to the art.”

Pope said socialization is great, especially since his art has messages of social commentary, but all of that is secondary to the art itself.

All of his art begins as drawings in a sketchbook, inspired by people he has encountered in life, whether it be through his travels or his life experiences in the skate industry.

Pope spent about a third of his adult life living in San Luis Obispo, but has traveled all over the U.S. and the world with skate teams, as both a rider and a manager.

“Change Required” is open from April 1 to April 21 at the San Luis Obispo Museum of Art.

Mercury 7 and the New 9

January 27, 2011, Portland, OR . . . On March 11, Artery will open an exhibit called Mercury 7 and the New 9, curated by Portlander Arthur Lindsey. Now in his 30’s, Lindsey has been
fascinated with space exploration for decades, and had long wanted to display this theme in
a visually compelling way by involving the works of his closest friends. The show will include
diverse artistic interpretations of Mercury 7 astronauts and the first human spacecraft to orbit
the earth, Project Mercury. The show opens with a kick off celebration at 7 pm on Friday March
11, 2011 at Artery, 2219 NW Raleigh in Portland. The show runs through May 17, 2011 and is
sponsored by Vans footwear.
Lindsey’s curatorial debut was in 2006 with "Calling all Cars" at Cal's Pharmacy’s The Dept. of
Skateboarding, and since 2008 he has been regularly curating the space at 15 NE Hancock. He
also runs Storyboard Projects, where he enlists artist friends to produce original art for limited
runs of signed and numbered skateboard decks.
Lindsey asked the Mercury 7 artists to interpret one of the original astronauts in their artwork.
The artists are Dave Carnie, Ashley Anson, Russ Pope, Salvador Perdomo, Ray Gordon, Kim
Hamblin, and Todd Bratrud. In the NASA project, additional astronauts chosen to orbit the
earth were called The New Nine. And for this show, The New 9 artists are Roger Seliner, Chris
Johanson, David Petersen, Andy Jenkins, Jason Adams, Chris Corales, Johanna Jackson,
Chris Pastras and Sam Coomes.
Although NASA’s Mercury 7 astronaut team was announced in April 1959, more than a decade
before Lindsey’s birth, space voyage always captured his imagination. “The show is a tribute to
the endless opportunities that space travel held for us in the 1970’s and 80’s,” Lindsey says. “It’s
the reflection of wonder and adventure seen through the eyes of a 7 year old kid, combined with
the innocence and dreams we had both as a nation and individually. I am happy my friends are
supporting me in this vision while highlighting the diversity of their works. And coincidentally, this
year is the 50th anniversary of the first man in space!”
Artwork in the show will range from $300 to $5,000 per piece. More on the show can be found at

Russ Pope's paintings scare us. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Amid squares and streaks of odd, generic color—the bio on his website says it's rejected Home Depot paint—Pope's oblong figures, often just heads or torsos, their faces wrenched in some personal anxiousness, sorrow or rage, speak to the kind of dread that many of us feel but leave unstated. The thick, dark, black outlining on the paintings not only lends the work a punk sensibility, but also hems the characters in, underscoring their limited ability to escape. He leaves subtle hints in some of his paintings that the source of that simmering helplessness is economic or familial, but it feels far more existential. The sickness is in the soul . . . and how do you get away from that? In Pope's world, we're not sure you can.

Photos from Downtown Showdown. Paramount Studios are radical, got to check out the insides of the movie sets and cruise the backlots in a golf cart. The Studio people were very cool, and Steve VanDoren rips for putting on such a cool event to support skateboarding and skateboarders.
